Pentagon Permits Ukraine Strikes in Russia

Ukraine’s Armed Forces have been granted permission by the United States to use missiles to strike targets inside Russia in self-defense. The strikes are not limited to just areas near the Kharkiv region, according to the Pentagon.

The Pentagon stated that Ukraine can retaliate against Russian forces attacking from inside Russia, treating their territory as a “safe zone.” This decision follows a recent easing of restrictions on the use of longer-range capabilities donated to Ukraine amidst Russia’s latest offensive near the border.

Spokesperson Charlie Dietz emphasized that allowing Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression is based on common sense rather than geography. The US has also granted permission for the use of air defense systems to take down Russian planes, even if they are in Russian airspace, before posing a threat to Ukrainian territory.

National security spokesman John Kirby highlighted the urgent need for additional support as Russia escalates missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. The expedited shipments will include hundreds of Patriot missiles to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
