Opposition Parties in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria Reject Appointment of State Elections Commission Chairperson

Opposition parties in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria have voiced their rejection of the recent appointment of the chairperson of the state elections commission, Abdalla Hassan Famai Adidi. The appointment was made by the national election commission chairperson, Prof Abednego Akok, on June 19.

Adidi currently serves as the Director General for Local Government and Law Enforcement agencies in Eastern Equatoria, leading to concerns from opposition parties that he may have biases towards the ruling party in the upcoming elections. The opposition parties are advocating for non-partisan individuals with integrity to oversee the electoral process.

Members of various political parties have expressed their discontent regarding the appointment, emphasizing the importance of impartiality and adherence to the law in selecting commission members. Civil society groups have highlighted the need for an independent commission to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.

As tensions rise over the appointment, stakeholders stress the significance of upholding the principles of democracy and the rule of law in South Sudan’s electoral system.
