A senior rebel commander, Gen. John Kenyi Lotio, has broken away from the National Salvation Front (NAS) led by Gen. Thomas Cirillo to form his own movement, the National Salvation United Forces (NASUF).
Accusing Gen. Cirillo of poor leadership, Gen. Lotio aims to unite deserting troops to bring hope to the people of South Sudan. The split has led to Brig. Gen. Joseph Taban pledging allegiance to NASUF.
UNMISS has raised concerns about increased violence by armed groups in Yei and Lainya, with reports of abductions of ex-combatants and veterans to swell their ranks.
