A recent air strike in eastern Syria near the Iraq border claimed the lives of three pro-Iran fighters, at least two of whom were Iraqis. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the strike in Deir Ezzor province, an area where Iran’s influence is strong and often targeted by Israel and the United States.
The strike, which resulted in the deaths of two Iraqi fighters from the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, also caused an explosion in Albukamal countryside near the Syrian-Iraqi borders. While the Sayyed al-Shuhada Brigades in Iraq blamed the United States for the attack on their reconnaissance patrol vehicle, no official claim of responsibility has been made.
Israel, known for its frequent strikes in Syria, has been targeting Iran-backed groups since the civil war in 2011. In a similar incident in March, 16 Tehran-affiliated fighters were killed along with a World Health Organisation civilian. Despite Iran’s denial of having combat troops in Syria, their influence remains significant.
