Limpopo pangolin trader gets 5-year prison term

A Limpopo man, George Marawidzi, 60, was recently sentenced to five years in prison or a R10,000 fine for the illegal possession of a pangolin in Phalaborwa, Limpopo.

Marawidzi was apprehended last year following a tip-off about his intent to sell a pangolin in Hoedspruit. A joint operation involving the Hawks, CIC National Security, D-Dass, and Hoedspruit Farmawatch led to the discovery of the pangolin hidden in his vehicle boot.

Despite failing to produce a permit for the endangered species, Marawidzi was released on bail of R5,000 before being convicted and sentenced.

The success of this case highlights the commitment of law enforcement agencies in combating wildlife crime, especially the illegal trade of pangolins. The sentencing of Marawidzi sends a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated and will face severe consequences.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting endangered species like pangolins and the significant role that the community plays in reporting such criminal activities.
