The Lagos state is currently facing a surge in suspected cholera cases, with the number reaching 421. Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, shared this alarming update on his Instagram handle, highlighting the need for immediate action.

Efforts are being made by the Emergency Operations Centre and various partners to combat the spread of the disease through contact tracing, community-based surveillance, and awareness campaigns. The confirmed cases have been recorded across 20 Local Government Areas in the state, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.

Cholera, a water and food-borne illness caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria, poses a significant health risk if left untreated. The World Health Organisation has reported a global increase in cholera cases, with Nigeria experiencing its own epidemic during the rainy season.

While progress has been made in distributing Oral Cholera Vaccines, the fight against cholera continues to be a pressing concern for public health officials worldwide.
