A Kyoto hotel recently made headlines after illegally refusing accommodation to an Israeli man, citing his potential ties to the conflict in the Gaza Strip. The local government promptly intervened, informing Hotel Material that such discriminatory practices violate the law prohibiting establishments from denying visitors unless under special circumstances.
Israel’s embassy in Tokyo condemned the hotel’s actions, labeling it as a blatant case of discrimination that goes against Japan’s business regulations. The embassy emphasized the need for the hotel to address the issue seriously and uphold values of respect and equality.
Despite the city’s investigation concluding that the hotel’s reasoning for turning away the Israeli guest was unjustified, the hotel has chosen to remain silent and handle the situation through legal representation.
Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa also expressed disapproval of accommodation refusal based on nationality, emphasizing the importance of all visitors feeling welcome and safe in Japan.
