Kagame defends democracy in Rwanda as election campaign starts

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame is gearing up for the upcoming July 15 presidential election, aiming to extend his 24-year rule over the country. With nine million registered voters, the election will also include legislative contests, a first in Rwanda.

Having led since the aftermath of the 1994 genocide, Kagame faces opposition from figures like Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana. Some contenders, such as Bernard Ntaganda, Victoire Ingabire, and Diane Rwigara, have faced legal barriers to participation.

Despite criticisms, Kagame defends Rwanda’s democratic progress and economic growth post-genocide. Human Rights Watch highlights concerns about political repression in the country, with Kagame’s rule secured until 2034 due to constitution changes in 2015.

The upcoming elections also feature a diverse pool of candidates vying for parliamentary seats. Kagame’s party currently holds the majority, with opposition parties like the Democratic Green Party and Social Party Imberakuri represented in the parliament.
