Canada’s recent decision to declare Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist entity” has sparked outrage in the Iranian government. The Italian ambassador to Tehran, who represents Canada’s interests in Iran, was summoned by the Director-General for Americas at the Foreign Ministry. Tehran’s strong protest against Ottawa’s violation of international law was communicated, and warnings about potential consequences were issued.
The move by Canada to list the IRGC as a terrorist entity was condemned by Iran as a hostile act that violates international law. The IRGC is seen as a sovereign institution that plays a crucial role in safeguarding national security and stability in the region.
Iran’s interim Foreign Minister also criticized Canada’s decision, describing it as a misguided gift to enemies of peace and stability in West Asia. Canada’s history of anti-Iran actions, including expelling Iranians and supporting anti-Iran terrorists, has strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Despite these tensions, the Iranian government remains steadfast in defending its national sovereignty and the legitimacy of the IRGC.
Last month, Canada became the second country in North America to blacklist the IRGC, following the United States. The history of strained relations between Canada and Iran dates back to 2012 when Canada severed diplomatic ties with Iran. In 2022, Iran imposed sanctions on Canadian officials for supporting anti-Iran terrorists.
