In a grandiose reception in Pyongyang, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Wednesday. The two leaders pledged closer cooperation as they face challenges from the West. They participated in a welcoming ceremony at Kim Il Sung Square, where Russian and North Korean flags adorned the buildings, with residents waving bouquets of flowers as a brass band played patriotic songs.
After two hours of one-on-one talks, Putin expressed gratitude for North Korea’s support in Russian policy, including in Ukraine. Kim, in turn, showed solidarity with Russia’s military operation in Ukraine and vowed to support their policies. The two signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty, upgrading ties between the two countries.
As Russia and North Korea strengthen their cooperation, analysts speculate on the extent of their military collaboration amidst strained relations with the West. Putin and Kim are presenting a united front against U.S. hegemony, with Putin inviting Kim to Moscow.
Both countries are seeking to counter sanctions through trade mechanisms not controlled by the West. However, concerns linger about potential weapons cooperation, raising security threats in the region.
