China has introduced the death penalty in judicial guidelines for staunch supporters of Taiwanese independence. The new guidelines, announced on Friday, intend to severely punish individuals advocating Taiwan independence and inciting secession crimes according to Chinese law.
Activities like promoting Taiwan’s international memberships or military contacts with foreign nations will be penalized, ranging from prison sentences to the death penalty. The death penalty will apply to ringleaders causing serious harm, while others supporting Taiwan’s independence face lengthy jail terms. Taiwan has criticized the new rules, asserting China’s lack of jurisdiction over the island. China has taken similar punitive actions against Taiwanese officials in the past, including imposing sanctions and banning business units for relations with Taiwan. Amidst these tensions, the U.S. approved a significant arms sale to Taiwan, highlighting the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region.
