A devastating wildfire in southeast Turkey has claimed the lives of 12 people and injured over 75 individuals. The fire, which swept through the mainly Kurdish region, also resulted in the deaths of hundreds of animals.
The blaze, which occurred between the cities of Diyarbakir and Mardin, left vast areas of land charred and blackened. The government’s response to the crisis was criticized by the pro-Kurdish DEM party as being inadequate.
As efforts were made to combat the fires, a new blaze broke out near the village of Ergani. The impact on livestock was particularly severe, with many sheep and goats succumbing to the flames. Veterinary assistance was urgently needed to treat the surviving animals.
The cause of the fire, attributed to “stubble burning,” prompted an investigation by the public prosecutor’s office. The incident reflects the growing threat of wildfires in Turkey, exacerbated by climate change.
