The Biden administration has banned Kaspersky, a Russia-based cybersecurity firm, from selling its popular antivirus products in the US due to national security concerns. The US commerce department found that Kaspersky’s operations posed a risk because of the Russian government’s cyber capabilities and influence over the company. Commerce secretary Gina Raimondo stated that Russia has a history of using companies like Kaspersky to gather and weaponize sensitive US information.
In response, Kaspersky emphasized its commitment to US national security and expressed disappointment in the decision. The company vowed to explore legal options to preserve its operations and relationships. This move marks the first action taken under an executive order issued during the Trump administration, giving the commerce department authority to investigate national security risks posed by certain companies.
Kaspersky, with a global presence serving millions of users and thousands of clients, can continue some operations in the US until September 29 to allow for a smooth transition to alternative vendors. However, three entities linked to Kaspersky have also been added to a national security concern list for their collaboration with Russian military and intelligence agencies.
