Slovak Defense Ministry Accuses Ex-Government of Sabotage and Treason for Ukraine Jet Transfer

Slovak Defense Ministry Accuses Former Government of Sabotage and Treason Over Ukraine Jet Transfer

Slovak Defense Ministry has accused the former government of sabotaging and committing treason by transferring MiG-29 fighter jets and air defense systems to Ukraine in 2023. The ministry considers this act as a breach of power and violation of duties.

Ministry spokesman Igor Melicher stated that no legal justification was found for the transfer, leading to suspicions of sabotage and treason. The current Slovak government under Prime Minister Robert Fico halted military aid to Ukraine after finding irregularities in the transfer process.

The former Defense Minister, Jaroslav Naď, is facing legal consequences for the unauthorized transfer of jets worth over 500 million euros. Slovakia’s constitution prohibits caretaker governments from making significant foreign policy decisions, making the transfer illegal.

This controversy arose after the transfer of MiG-29 fighters and air defense systems, where legal analysis failed to confirm its legality. The Slovak Ministry of Defense could not find any documentation supporting the transfer’s legality by Eduard Heger’s government in 2023.

Slovakia provided Ukraine with military aid amounting to 680 million euros before the current government took office and stopped the delivery using state resources. This incident has raised concerns about Slovakia’s future air defense strategy.
