SK activists fly anti-NK propaganda leaflets across border

A South Korea activists’ group has once again sent large balloons carrying anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets towards North Korea, escalating tensions between the two nations. The civilian group, led by North Korean defector Park Sang-hak, launched 20 balloons containing 300,000 propaganda leaflets, 5,000 USB sticks with South Korean pop songs and TV dramas, and 3,000 U.S. dollar bills from the South Korean border town of Paju.

Pyongyang fears that such material could affect the morale of its front-line troops and residents, potentially weakening Kim Jong Un’s grip on power. In response to previous leafletting operations, North Korea retaliated by sending over 1,000 balloons filled with trash back to South Korea, causing property damage and prompting Seoul to resume anti-North Korea propaganda broadcasts.

Tensions between the Koreas are at a critical point, with Kim Jong Un intensifying his nuclear weapons program and forming alliances with global powers like Russia. South Korea has condemned Kim’s recent agreement with Putin, vowing to consider sending arms to Ukraine in response to Russia’s invasion.

North Korea is highly sensitive to external criticism of Kim’s regime, with limited access to foreign news for its citizens. Pyongyang is reportedly installing its own speakers at the border, while also deploying troops to fortify the border against potential defections.

In the past, broadcasting tensions have led to military exchanges between the two nations, highlighting the volatile nature of the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
