By Veronica Iriarte – World Albatross Day was celebrated with the theme “Marine Protected Areas – Safeguarding our Oceans” announced by the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP). The Falkland Islands play a significant role in albatross conservation, being home to 72% of the black-browed albatross breeding population and providing a vital foraging area for several endangered species.

Albatross populations globally face challenges due to fisheries interactions, leading to declines in some species by more than 3% per year. The Falkland Islands Government has implemented measures to mitigate seabird bycatch in fishing operations, aiding in conservation efforts.

With 2024 marking 20 years since ACAP’s inception, ongoing efforts are being made to protect albatrosses and petrels. As we celebrate World Albatross Day, take a moment to admire these seabirds and reflect on our impact on their conservation.

Let’s ensure we continue working towards preserving these magnificent creatures and the oceans they call home.
