Deadly Clashes in Kenya: Man Dies from Gunshot Wound During Protests

In Nairobi, an unidentified man died from a gunshot wound to his thigh during a riot police crackdown amidst nationwide protests against government tax hikes. Rights groups reported at least 200 injuries and over 100 arrests in Kenya.

Amnesty International and other organizations condemned the violent crackdown by riot police involving tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets. In Nairobi, 200 people were injured, with some hit by cars or rubber bullets. Reports suggested that live rounds were also used during the clashes.

The protests stemmed from government plans to raise $2.7bn in additional taxes, sparking outrage among Kenyans who believe the measures will burden the public. Despite amendments, protesters demand the complete rejection of the legislation, citing broken promises to reduce taxes and lower the cost of living.

Despite parliamentary approval of the finance bill, protests continue as Kenyans push back against the proposed tax hikes and demand government accountability.
