Louisiana Governor Requires Displaying Ten Commandments in Schools
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry recently signed a bill into law that mandates the display of the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom in the state. This move sets Louisiana apart as the only state in the country with such a requirement, aimed at expanding faith in public schools.
However, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has announced plans to sue in order to block the law, citing violations of the constitutional separation of church and state as well as a US Supreme Court ruling. The ACLU, along with other civil rights organizations, argues that politicians should not impose their religious beliefs on students and families in public schools.
In addition to the Ten Commandments requirement, Governor Landry signed several other bills, including measures to authorize school chaplains, limit discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity, and restrict the use of transgender students’ preferred names and pronouns without parental consent.
Despite objections from civil rights groups, the law represents a shift towards conservative policies under the new leadership in Louisiana. With a majority of Republican lawmakers and officials, the state government has been able to enact a conservative agenda during the recent legislative session.
