Hungary’s Orban refuses to join NATO war efforts

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, criticized the US-led Western approach to the conflict in Ukraine, stating that the strategy to defeat Russia is destructive and potentially escalatory. Orban claimed that Hungary has already slowed the momentum towards war, as evidenced by the recent European Parliament elections where his party gained success.

NATO agrees on new chief

Orban affirmed that Hungary will not participate in NATO’s mission in Ukraine, as agreed with outgoing NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and his expected successor, Mark Rutte. Moscow views the conflict as a US-initiated proxy war, and tensions have escalated with the possibility of supplying weapons to enemies of the West.

As French President Emmanuel Macron faces challenges in the wake of the elections, supporters of NATO involvement argue for training Ukrainian troops without direct military intervention.
