Finland Urged to Reevaluate Arms Trade with Israel

In response to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, Kimmo Kiljunen, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, has submitted a written question urging the Finnish government to reevaluate and monitor the country’s arms trade with Israel. Kiljunen cited warnings from international law experts, UN special rapporteurs, and human rights organizations about the risk of genocide in Gaza.

Kiljunen pointed out that the International Court of Justice has affirmed a real and imminent risk of genocide in Gaza, with ongoing concerns highlighted by UN special rapporteurs. Despite Finland’s support for a UN Human Rights Council resolution calling for an end to arms exports to Israel, Kiljunen raised concerns about Finland’s involvement in arms exports through companies like Patria and Nammo.

Kiljunen’s inquiry seeks clarity on how the Finnish government monitors weapons exports to Israel and ensures compliance with international law and human rights obligations. The focus is on preventing potential human rights abuses in conflict zones like Gaza.
