Defence forces initiate internal investigation over assault.

The Defence Forces have initiated internal proceedings against a serving soldier who received a suspended sentence for assaulting a woman. The soldier beat Natasha O’Brien unconscious in a random street attack and later posted about it on social media. The Defence Forces commended O’Brien’s bravery and expressed hope for her full recovery.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee praised O’Brien for speaking out against the assault and highlighted the possibility of the Director of Public Prosecutions appealing the sentence. She emphasized the importance of supporting and encouraging victims of violence to come forward.

McEntee mentioned upcoming legislation to enable cross-examination of individuals giving character references in gender-based violence cases. She stressed the need for accountability for criminals while providing victims with protection and support.

McEntee acknowledged the prevalence of gender-based violence in Ireland and the ongoing efforts to address this issue. She emphasized the importance of creating a safe environment for women to report crimes and receive justice.
