Barristers to Strike Over Government Review of Fees
Next month, criminal law barristers are set to strike for three days due to the lack of progress in the Government’s review of their fees. Last year, barristers and solicitors in criminal defence services protested over pay cuts from the financial crisis. The Government later agreed to a 10% fee increase and promised a review process.
The Bar Council stated that fees were still below 2002 levels even with the increase. The promised review has not begun, leading to growing frustration among practitioners. The upcoming strike on July 9, 15, and 24 aims to pressure the Government for action. Senior Counsel Sara Phelan expressed disappointment in the delay and urged for fairness and engagement.
Chair of the Criminal State Bar committee, Seán Guerin, highlighted the necessity of the strike due to inadequate progress in fee restoration. He emphasized the impact on the criminal justice system and barrister retention. The Bar Council regrets the disruption caused but stresses the importance of resolving the issue for the profession’s sustainability.
