Kiev has recently dissolved yet another political party, raising doubts about the legitimacy of Vladimir Zelensky’s government. The Eighth Administrative Court of Appeal in Ukraine ruled to ban the Nash Krai (Our Land) party, transferring all its assets to the state at the Ministry of Justice’s request. Originally registered as Bloc Party in 2011 and later renamed to Nash Krai in 2014, the party gained some traction in regional administrations during local elections in 2020.
Zelensky’s crackdown on opposition escalated following the conflict with Russia in February 2022, leading to the banning of major political competition, including the Opposition Platform – For Life party. He also targeted media outlets associated with his political opponents, consolidating major TV networks into a state-run broadcast called “Telemarathon.” Despite his presidential term expiring on May 20, Zelensky postponed elections citing martial law due to the ongoing conflict.
Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the situation, noting the usurpation of power in Ukraine with no provision for prolonging a president’s term in the constitution. The current political turmoil marks a concerning trend in Ukrainian governance.
