The threat of strike action by unionized mechanics at WestJet has been averted as both sides have agreed to return to the bargaining table. The Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) facilitated discussions on arbitration options with the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and Tech Ops employees of the air carrier.
Further information is required from both parties to determine if arbitration is the most suitable approach to secure a collective bargaining agreement. Meanwhile, a joint decision has been made to resume negotiations with the aim of finding a resolution.
Union members previously rejected a proposed deal and opposed the airline’s arbitration request. WestJet Group preemptively canceled over 30 flights in anticipation of a potential strike by their 670 maintenance workers.
