Vietnam criticized for hosting Putin on state visit

Russian president Vladimir Putin visited Vietnam to strengthen ties amidst heavy sanctions due to the war in Ukraine.

Putin seeks support in Asia and rekindles historic partnership with Vietnam, aiming to broaden diplomatic relationships.

Fresh from a meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, he signed a mutual aid agreement with North Korea amid growing tensions with the West.

The US has criticized the visit, cautioning countries against normalizing Putin’s actions.

The focus of Putin’s visit to Vietnam is on economy, education, and energy, aiming to enhance bilateral trade currently at $3.5bn.

In an article for Vietnam’s Communist Party newspaper, Putin praised Vietnam’s stance on international law and thanked them for their position on the Ukrainian crisis.

Vietnam, balancing ties with the US and EU, remains neutral on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

With Biden’s recent visit, Vietnam aims to deepen cooperation with the US.
