Somalia’s Government Seeks to Slow Withdrawal of Peacekeepers
Somalia’s government is concerned about the potential security vacuum that may occur due to the withdrawal of African peacekeepers. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (Atmis) plans to withdraw by December 31, prompting Somalia to request a delay until September for half of the troops to leave. This adjustment is necessary to prevent a security crisis in the region.
Neighbouring countries like Uganda and Kenya are also apprehensive about the situation, as the withdrawal could lead to a resurgence of the al Shabaab militant group. The European Union and United States are cautious about the financing and sustainability of peacekeeping operations in Somalia, complicating negotiations for a new force.
Mohamed El-Amine Souef, the AU special representative to Somalia, emphasized the importance of a conditions-based drawdown to prevent any security vacuum. The Peace and Security Council is scheduled to discuss the drawdown and follow-up mission in Somalia later this week.
Despite setbacks and concerns, the Somali government remains optimistic about its security forces’ capabilities and is working towards sustainable peace and security in the region.
