The federal government, through the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF), has successfully removed 1,618 officers with fake employment letters from its payroll system, IPPIS, in the past year. Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, the Head of Civil Service, made this announcement during a media parley for the 2024 Civil Service Week.
Yemi-Esan highlighted that thorough physical verifications by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have reduced the civil service workforce from over 100,000 to a verified count of 69,308 currently on the payroll. She also emphasized the implementation of welfare initiatives, like low-interest housing schemes, to deter corrupt activities among civil servants.
In collaboration with ICPC and EFCC, efforts are being made to curb corruption and encourage civil servants to avoid engaging in corrupt practices. Welfare packages, including housing schemes with low-interest rates, aim to reduce the temptation for corruption among civil servants.
Furthermore, Yemi-Esan announced the successful deployment of a whistleblower scheme, urging individuals to report corruption anonymously through online platforms or directly to the OHCSF. These initiatives are crucial steps towards promoting integrity and accountability within the civil service.
