Leaving Home for a Better Future: The Exodus of Sri Lankan Doctors
In the midst of economic turmoil and a healthcare system in crisis, Sri Lankan doctors are choosing to leave their homeland for brighter opportunities abroad. Lahiru Prabodha Gamage, a 35-year-old doctor, made the difficult decision to move to the United Kingdom after facing financial struggles and a lack of respect from government authorities.
With over 1,700 doctors having left the country in the past two years, Sri Lanka is experiencing a severe shortage of medical professionals. Hospitals are forced to suspend services and close wards due to the exodus of doctors seeking better working conditions and financial stability.
Eranda Ranasinghe Arachchi, a cardiologist, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the financial constraints and lack of recognition faced by doctors in Sri Lanka. Despite their love for the country, many feel compelled to seek opportunities elsewhere.
As the healthcare system struggles to cope, the Government Medical Officers Association has urged the government to address the root causes of the doctor shortage. While some doctors express a willingness to return if conditions improve, for now, leaving home seems to be the only option for those seeking a better future.
