Tragedy Strikes as Extreme Heat Claims Lives of Hajj Pilgrims
Almost 2 million Muslims are concluding the Hajj 2024 pilgrimage, with hundreds succumbing to the scorching heat while en route to the Kaaba at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
Reports indicate that at least 562 pilgrims have lost their lives during the journey, with Egypt alone reporting 307 deaths and 118 individuals still missing. The soaring temperatures, exceeding 51 degrees Celsius, made the pilgrimage unbearable for many.
Climate scientists warn that the current situation is a glimpse of a grim future, as global warming exacerbates the extreme conditions. The hajj, a religious obligation that dates back centuries, faces unprecedented challenges due to the changing climate.
Future Forecasts and Precautions
Experts predict that by the 2040s, the hajj will coincide with extreme summer heat in Saudi Arabia, posing a greater risk to pilgrims. To mitigate these dangers, Saudi Arabia has implemented heat strategies, including shaded areas and water points every 500 meters.
Despite efforts to provide relief, pilgrims like Wilayet Mustafa expressed concerns about the lack of adequate support during the pilgrimage. The Saudi government’s response and preparedness have come under scrutiny amidst the rising death toll.
