Canada has officially designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, joining the United States in this stance. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced the decision, citing strong evidence of the IRGC’s involvement in terrorist activities.
The move comes after years of pressure from opposition legislators, as the Liberal government had previously resisted listing the IRGC due to concerns about potential consequences. However, based on legal considerations and security advice, Canada is now taking action against the powerful faction that controls elite armed and intelligence forces in Iran.
In addition to designating the IRGC, Canada is also considering investigating and potentially removing former senior Iranian officials residing in the country. This decision opens up the possibility of charging individuals who support the IRGC financially or materially, and imposing targeted sanctions on its leadership.
With this development, Canada continues to strengthen its stance against global terrorism and demonstrates its commitment to disrupting networks associated with the IRGC.
