A coalition of local human rights groups in Nigeria, the Human Rights Advocacy Crusaders (HRAC), is urging security agents in Rivers State to remain neutral in the ongoing local government crisis to prevent further violence and clashes among party supporters. Governor Siminalayi Fubara issued a directive for heads of administration to take over local government areas after the expiration of local government officials’ tenure and appointed caretaker chairpersons in compliance with the law. However, some outgoing chairmen have refused to vacate their positions. HRAC emphasized the importance of upholding the law and ensuring a peaceful democratic process, urging security agents to prevent violence and maintain peace without taking sides. They also encouraged former officials to seek re-election through legal channels rather than resorting to violence.
