The Brazilian Federal Police initiated the 28th phase of the investigation into the violent riots that occurred on January 8, 2023, when supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro attacked government buildings in Brasília.
According to reports, the operation involves 15 search and seizure warrants and 12 personal searches in multiple states. Last week, efforts were made to apprehend fugitives who had fled to neighboring countries.
The investigation targets vandals, financiers, and instigators behind the riots, as well as officials who neglected their duties. The rioters’ goal was to incite chaos and potentially bring back Bolsonaro to power through an emergency situation.
In a controversial move, Congressman Marcelo Crivella proposed a bill in April 2023 to grant amnesty to the rioters, with Congressman Rodrigo Valadares, a Bolsonaro supporter, leading the initiative.
