The Australian Government has pledged an additional $2 million to aid in the reconstruction efforts following a major landslide in Papua New Guinea, which resulted in the deaths of 670 villagers and the displacement of 1,650 survivors. The funding will go towards restoring critical road access and supporting healthcare services in the affected region.
During a visit to the landslide site in Mulitaka, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the importance of restoring connectivity to the Highlands Highway, the transport lifeline of the area. The assistance package also includes provisions for learning packs for children affected by the disaster.
In addition to the reconstruction aid, Australia is also focusing on strengthening security in Papua New Guinea. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Wong unveiled a comprehensive aid package aimed at enhancing internal security and combating financial crime to bolster stability in the region.
With ongoing security concerns and recent incidents of violence in PNG, Australia is committed to working closely with its neighbor to ensure safety and stability for both nations. The strong bilateral relationship between the two countries remains a top priority for security and development in the Pacific region.
