Uruguay’s Navy recently received the Chamsuri class ROU 10 Huracán patrol vessel from South Korea, aimed at boosting the country’s capacity for United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. The vessel, with a 40mm Bofors cannon and powerful machine guns, offers superior firepower compared to existing patrol vessels. The handover ceremony at Jinhae Naval Base saw Uruguay’s flag raised on the ship for the first time, marking a significant milestone.

Ambassador Pablo Sheiner and Navy officials witnessed the event, highlighting the strategic partnership between the two countries. The Huracán, formerly known as PKM 318, will be transported to Montevideo on a merchant ship later this year. Chamsuri class boats, designed for defense against North Korean threats, have a long history of service and remain vital assets in maritime security.
