Ecuador has been grappling with an electricity generation crisis since last year, leading to rationing in major cities. The government implemented rationing due to a drought linked to the El Niño weather pattern affecting hydroelectric plants, which produce 75% of the nation’s power.
Emilia Cevallos, a waitress in Quito, expressed her surprise at the blackout’s impact on businesses, highlighting the challenges faced by the community in a time of uncertainties.
