Ecuador was hit by an unexpected blackout following a failure in an energy transmission line, despite previous warnings about potential power outages in the country due to production issues. Minister of Energy Roberto Luque confirmed the outage caused by a cascade disconnection, leaving the nation without electricity.
Efforts are underway to restore power by repairing the faulty lines, but some areas experienced a 20-minute blackout, while many cities continued to be affected. Emilia Cevallos, a waitress in Quito, described the outage as surprising, with traffic lights and businesses left without power.
As a result, the Quito municipality deployed traffic agents to manage the flow of traffic, and the city’s subway system was suspended. Ecuador has been grappling with an electricity generation crisis since last year, leading to rationing as reservoirs depleted due to a drought linked to the El Nino weather pattern.
