The South African Medical Association (Sama) is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to consider reducing the size of the cabinet in order to reallocate funds to address urgent healthcare needs. According to Sama, this move could lead to improved service delivery and health outcomes for all South Africans.
Sama CEO Dr Mzulungile Theo Nodikida highlighted the pressing health challenges faced by the nation, including a lack of doctors, deteriorating healthcare infrastructure, and insufficient medical supplies. By redirecting financial resources from a smaller cabinet, the government could invest in healthcare infrastructure and equip hospitals and clinics to provide high-quality care.
Nodikida emphasized that a leaner government structure would not only save money but also promote efficiency and accountability. Reports suggest that reducing the cabinet to 15 ministers could save the country billions of rands and potentially create thousands of healthcare positions.
This strategic budget reallocation would demonstrate a strong commitment to the health and future of the nation. Sama is urging the government to engage with stakeholders to explore the benefits of this proposal for the nation’s health.
