President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party members, led by Congresswoman Gleisi Hoffmann, have filed a lawsuit to prevent Central Bank chairman Roberto Campos Neto from making political statements. Tensions between the government and Campos Neto have escalated since Lula’s inauguration in January 2023, with accusations of hindering economic growth and a hidden political agenda.
In a recent radio interview, Lula criticized Campos Neto for working “against the country.” The chairman’s acceptance of honors at the São Paulo State Congress and dinner with potential opponent Governor Tarcísio de Freitas sparked further controversy. Campos Neto’s support for a bill to increase the bank’s financial independence has drawn criticism.
The lawsuit alleges that Campos Neto’s actions are driven by private interests and violate principles of morality and impartiality. Despite ongoing public statements and interviews, the Central Bank has yet to comment on the matter.
