The Office of Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities has issued a notice to the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India regarding the inaccessibility of the Isa Khan Tomb for individuals with reduced mobility and wheelchair users.
The notice was prompted by media reports highlighting the difficulties faced by persons with disabilities in accessing the historic site in Delhi.
Quoting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the Chief Commissioner directed the Ministry and the ASI to respond within 30 days to address the lack of accessibility at the tomb.
Failure to comply may result in the case being disposed of ex-parte, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the Act’s provisions and other legal requirements.
The letter references key sections of the Act, emphasizing the government’s duty to ensure equal access and non-discrimination for persons with disabilities, including creating an inclusive environment and providing reasonable accommodation.
The notice also invokes various sections of the Act, highlighting the need for promoting cultural participation, formulating accessibility standards, and ensuring all public buildings are made accessible within a specified timeframe.
