Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar, who won seven seats in the recent European Parliament elections, supports Ukraine’s right to self-defense but opposes sending weapons to Kyiv. Magyar, a serious opponent of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, clarified his stance after joining the European Parliament.
Under Orban’s leadership, Hungary has remained close to Moscow and obstructed aid for Ukraine. Despite this, Magyar’s MEPs entered the European Parliament as part of the European People’s Party (EPP) group, with conditions including support for Ukraine. Weber, the EPP party chief, negotiated with Magyar on this issue.
Magyar reaffirmed his support for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty, criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin as an aggressor. While cautious about discussions related to the conflict, Magyar assured that other forms of support would be provided to the Ukrainian people.
