CAR faces spillover from Sudan conflict

The Central African Republic is facing increased insecurity due to the activities of armed groups, with a spillover of the conflict from neighboring Sudan, as highlighted in a recent U.N. report. The conflict in Sudan has led to over 14,000 deaths and 33,000 injuries, with Sudanese refugees fleeing across the border into the Central African Republic.

Amidst this unrest, trade and aid deliveries have been disrupted, leaving the population in Vakaga and Haute-Kotto regions vulnerable. The country’s vast mineral wealth, including gold and diamonds, remains untapped due to rebel groups operating freely. The conflict that began in 2013 has persisted despite a peace deal in 2019, with the rise of new rebel groups complicating the situation.

In addition, the presence of Russian mercenaries and military instructors in the country has added another layer of complexity, with recent clashes resulting in casualties. The infamous Lord’s Resistance Army has also been impacted by the conflict in Sudan, with its leader Joseph Kony under investigation for war crimes.

The situation in the Central African Republic remains fluid and precarious, with various armed groups vying for power amidst a backdrop of instability and violence.
