Burkina Faso has suspended French broadcaster TV5 for six months due to spreading “disinformation” about the country’s transitional government. This move follows suspensions of other international news outlets like Le Monde, The Guardian, and Deutsche Welle. The regulator also imposed a fine of 50 million CFA francs on TV5 for hosting a critic of the military regime. This is not the first time TV5 has faced suspension, as it was previously suspended for airing reports critical of the military’s actions. This crackdown on foreign news outlets began after Captain Ibrahim TraorĂ© seized power in a coup in September 2022. The majority of the affected outlets are French, raising concerns about press freedom and censorship in Burkina Faso.
