Ukraine is facing electricity blackouts due to Russian strikes on power plants, causing a significant decrease in generation capacity. With thermal and hydro plants targeted, the country’s grid operator announced rolling blackouts to manage supply.
Ukrainian officials are implementing hourly outage schedules to households and industries from 00:00 to 24:00. The outages have expanded to ensure supply amid increased consumption due to warmer weather, affecting critical infrastructure.
To mitigate the shortfall, Ukraine is importing electricity from EU countries and seeking support to restore its energy sector. The country’s air defense systems are also being reinforced to protect against further attacks.
Repairing the damaged plants is expected to be a long and costly process, with Ukrenergo warning of more serious outages in the coming weeks. The nation faces challenges in maintaining power stability amidst ongoing hostilities.
