Stoltenberg warns China: Consequences for backing Putin’s War

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg discussed China’s support for Russia in Ukraine with the BBC, emphasizing the need for consequences if China does not alter its stance. Stoltenberg criticized China for attempting to support Russia while also maintaining relations with European allies, stating that this approach is unsustainable in the long term.

During a recent visit to Washington, Stoltenberg also touched on nuclear weapons and defense costs. At a peace summit in Switzerland, countries vowed to support Kiev, but Russia dismissed the effort as futile, insisting on Ukrainian surrender for peace talks to proceed.

Stoltenberg mentioned ongoing discussions within NATO regarding potential sanctions on China for their technology support to Russia, crucial in building weapons used in Ukraine. Economic sanctions may be considered if China’s behavior does not change.

Notably, the US recently imposed sanctions targeting approximately 20 Chinese and Hong Kong-based companies for their support of Russia. Stoltenberg’s statements underscore the growing international concern over China’s role in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
