Indian Fishermen Arrested in Sri Lanka: A Recurring Concern
Four Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan waters. The fishermen crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line in Palk Strait and were apprehended in Neduntheevu, an island in northern Sri Lanka known for its coral chunks and sandy beaches.
The arrested fishermen, identified as K Parthiban, K Sarathi, N Ramadoss, and K Murali, were taken to Kankesanthurai Naval base in Jaffna. This incident highlights the recurring issue of Indian fishermen being arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy due to crossing the IMBL for a better fish catch.
The Ministry of External Affairs has been actively addressing this issue with the Sri Lankan government, emphasizing the humanitarian aspect of the situation and urging both sides to avoid the use of force. Despite efforts to safeguard Indian fishermen, challenges persist in the form of these arrests.
This incident once again underscores the need for diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing concerns of Indian fishermen operating in Sri Lankan waters.
