Putin praises N. Korea backing of Ukraine in visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a historic visit to North Korea in order to strengthen defense ties between the two countries amidst Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. This visit marks Putin’s first trip to North Korea in 24 years, highlighting the longstanding alliance between the two nations.

The meeting between Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signifies the growing partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang, both facing international sanctions over their respective actions. Despite accusations of North Korea supplying weapons to Russia during the Ukrainian conflict, both countries reaffirmed their mutual support at the United Nations.

The visit has raised concerns in the United States regarding regional security, especially for South Korea. The situation was further exacerbated when South Korean troops fired warning shots at North Korean soldiers who briefly crossed the border.

NATO and Ukrainian officials criticized the close relationship between Putin and Kim, urging greater support for Ukraine. Reports suggest that Russia and North Korea will sign a “strategic partnership” treaty, potentially exchanging military supplies for economic cooperation in areas like tourism and agriculture.
