Federal politicians have received their second-largest pay increase in the past decade from the independent body overseeing MPs’ salaries.
The Remuneration Tribunal announced a 3.5% salary increase for parliamentarians, raising the base rate for MPs to $233,650 annually.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will receive a $21,000 raise, bringing his salary to $607,490, while Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s pay will increase to $432,260.
The 3.5% raise is the second-largest in the last decade, following a 4% increase last year. The Remuneration Tribunal takes into account the Fair Work Commission’s annual wage reviews.
Workers were also given a pay rise of 3.75% by the FWC. The tribunal emphasized the need to offer competitive salaries to attract talented individuals to public office.
