Italy is considering transferring long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Kiev, potentially enabling strikes deep inside Russia. The missiles have a range of up to 560km, capable of hitting targets far beyond the front line in Russia.
This move is part of Italy’s ninth arms package for Ukraine, which Defense Minister Guido Crosetto will present for approval by the parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic. The package also includes the SAMP/T air defense system, artillery, and Stinger surface-to-air missiles, with finalization expected before the upcoming NATO summit in Washington on July 9.
Previously hesitant to allow Ukraine to use weapons for strikes in Russia, the transfer of long-range arms indicates a shift in Rome’s stance. However, Italian officials have emphasized that the use of Italian-supplied weapons on Russian soil is prohibited.
The UK and France have already supplied Storm Shadows to Ukraine for similar purposes. As tensions rise, NATO states are pressured to provide critical weapons to Ukraine, potentially escalating the conflict with Russia.
President Putin has warned of consequences if Western nations arm Ukraine for strikes on Russian soil, signaling a dangerous escalation in the region.
