Nigeria’s Center for Fiscal Transparency (CFT) and over 350 other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) from over 100 countries are urging the implementation of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) to combat corrupt practices in government. This call is being amplified at the 21st International Anti-Corruption Conference 2024 (IACC) Series in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The conference aims to achieve tangible progress in fighting corruption by focusing on restoring trust in public governance, ensuring integrity in climate finance, and countering the impact of populist and corrupt regimes on human rights, environmental health, and global stability.
Stakeholders will discuss ways to strengthen UNCAC implementation among member states through the convention’s review process. The CFT’s Public Relations Lead, Victor Agi, highlights the importance of promoting accountability and civic space in the UNCAC review process to combat corruption effectively.
The Center also introduced a civil society monitoring template for Nigeria’s implementation of the Convention, empowering citizens and CSOs to monitor the government’s progress actively. The conference aims to galvanise global efforts for honest discussions on combating corruption and promoting accountability.
