Growing Calls in Germany for Attitude Change towards Ukrainian Refugees

The secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party (FDP), Bijan Djir-Sarai, recently suggested that refugees from Ukraine should receive financial support equal to asylum seekers in Germany. According to DW, refugees from Ukraine currently receive citizen’s money upon arrival, while asylum applicants receive assistance under a different law, with lower financial support.

The monthly allowance for singles is higher for Ukrainian refugees compared to asylum seekers, with additional support for rent and utilities. Djir-Sarai argues that providing equal financial support would aid in the integration of refugees into the labor market more effectively, addressing the shortage of workers in various sectors.

Despite concerns about the increase in social assistance potentially discouraging work, Djir-Sarai believes that facilitating access to employment is crucial. Data shows that a significant number of Ukrainian refugees in Germany are already participating in integration programs and vocational training.

By aligning financial support for Ukrainian refugees with that of asylum seekers, Djir-Sarai aims to promote faster integration and ensure greater opportunities for employment in the country.
